The DC Alphas of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. will host This Is Our DC: A People’s Forum & Town Hall, a community conversation featuring candidates for Mayor of Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, March 11 from 6–8 PM at Kramer Middle School, moderated by @phil.lewis.

This forum will center the priorities shaping Wards 7 and 8 and give residents the opportunity to hear directly from mayoral candidates about the issues impacting our communities. The goal is to create space for community voices while providing clear information about what is on the ballot.

Interest continues to grow, with 157 people already registered to attend. We encourage Brothers and community members to join us for this important conversation.

We celebrate Bro. Dawson by sharing the words of Bro. George Walker as he, Bro. Randall Clark and Bro. Joseph Clark enjoyed the day with Bro. Dawson.

‘I am ending Black History Month with a fraternity brother (Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity) who is a legend. He is now ONE HUNDRED years young.
Ambassador Horace Dawson looks back on a career that included stints in Uganda, Nigeria, Liberia, the Philippines and Botswana. He taught so many and created global institutions that will have impact long after he’s gone. The number of people who came to bid him congratulations is testament to his ability to “walk with kings and not loose the common touch.” This is one inspiring and awe creating human. May our work always speak volumes more than our words.’

Named in honor of Jewel Eugene Kinckle Jones, this first-ever district-wide tennis match brought together brothers with the true spirit of fraternity. Both teams left it all on the court, showcasing skill, discipline, and brotherhood that reflect the very best of Alpha.

But this is only the beginning — the first of many matches with the trophy on the line! We’re excited to see more Alphas from across the DMV step up to the challenge in future matchups. Did you know former DC Mayor Marion Barry was a brother of Alpha Phi Alpha’s Mu Lambda chapter?

Born in Itta Bena, Mississippi, and raised in Memphis, Bro. Barry’s journey from the rural South to becoming a transformative leader in Washington, D.C. is a powerful chapter in Black history. After earning his degree from Le Moyne College and pursuing doctoral studies at the University of Tennessee, he left academia to join the Civil Rights Movement. As the first chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), he helped organize direct action campaigns across the South before bringing that same spirit of activism to the nation’s capital.

In Washington, Bro. Barry’s impact reshaped the political landscape. From serving on the city’s first elected school board and council under home rule to becoming a four-term mayor, he championed expanded employment opportunities and greater political access for Black and working-class residents—especially east of the Anacostia River. His administration prioritized economic inclusion and community empowerment at a time when many urban centers faced disinvestment. Whatever complexities marked his career, his role in advancing Black political leadership in a majority-Black city remains undeniable. Bro. Barry’s legacy is woven into the modern identity of the District and stands as a testament to Black civic power and resilience.

Our chapter witnessed firsthand how he lived Alpha every day. A three-time Howard graduate (BS ’83, MS ’88, PhD ’00), he arrived on the Yard in 1978 as a 98-pound scholarship wrestler and helped build a championship culture. He later returned as one of the nation’s youngest head wrestling coaches, earning MEAC Coach of the Year and NCAA Eastern Region Coach of the Year honors. Yet beyond the accolades, Bro. Like in many areas throughout the city, lingering ice from the recent snow storm has blocked several parts of our street, making it not only difficult to park but also challenging to navigate sidewalks. And, with freezing temperatures in the forecast this weekend, we want to take an abundance of caution to ensure everyone stays safe — no matter the occasion.

Lastly, for those who purchased tickets, we are working to ensure your tickets are fully refunded by this weekend. Please feel free to DM us if you have any additional questions or concerns.

This weekend, Mu Lambda brothers joined volunteers across the nation for Wreaths Across America, laying wreaths in remembrance of the brave men and women who served our country.

In the crisp December air, our brothers stood shoulder to shoulder reflecting, honoring, and uplifting the legacy of those who sacrificed so much. Moments like this remind us that service is not an event… it’s who we are.

Thank you to all the brothers who represented with dignity, gratitude, and brotherhood.

Last night, the Mu Lambda Chapter brought together community members, health experts, and civic leaders for an insightful and empowering conversation on the deep connection between voting, health outcomes, and community advocacy. From Ballots to Better Health!

From navigating local policy to understanding how legislation impacts access to care, our speakers reminded us of one powerful truth: Your Vote is a Health Issue.

We explored:

✨ How public policy shapes health equity
✨ Why civic engagement is essential to community well-being
✨ Tools and strategies for strengthening our collective voice
✨ The role of Black fraternities in driving informed participation

A heartfelt thank you to our distinguished panelists, moderators, and every Brother and guest who showed up ready to learn, engage, and lead.

When we vote, we influence the quality of healthcare, the safety of our neighborhoods, and the resources available to our families. Advocacy starts at the ballot box and extends far beyond it.

Today we honor and remember Brother James L. Wright Jr., a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Mu Lambda Chapter, a fearless journalist, and a devoted servant to our community.

“He was a passionate journalist who loved history and enjoyed writing stories about the people who make the nation’s capital the great place he called home.” ~ from The Washington Informer

Brother Wright spent over three decades using his pen to shine light on truth, justice, and community. Whether reporting on local politics or global affairs, he remained grounded in integrity, driven by excellence, and committed to service, values that echo the very heart of Alpha: “Manly Deeds, Scholarship, and Love for All Mankind.”

He carried the badge of Mu Lambda with honor, and his legacy extends far beyond journalism. He walked city halls, pressed for civic justice, and used his voice on behalf of the voiceless. To us, he was not only a Brother, he was family.

As we mourn his passing, let us also celebrate his life: his tireless work, his unwavering commitment, and his love for community.
